The Marker signal keeps the necromorph infection active, but only when they reach a sufficient number/mass are the necromorphs signaled to begin convergence.ĭr. In short, "Hive Mind" is just a name given to an enormous necromorph in error, and the necromorphs are-99% of the time-guided by instinct. Furthermore, Isaac encounters no enormous necormorph biomasses anywhere on the station the biggest ones-while gaining size-are nowhere near the bulk of the Leviathan, Slug, or Hive Mind found in DS1. We know this because of the general chaos and confusion of the people fleeing the station: they had no time to prepare a proper escape. Dead Space 2 begins in the midst of the outbreak perhaps a day after the infection began. The second big indicator that the Hive Mind is just a name given to it by humans and not its function is its lack of presence on Titan Station. It could have easily called the lesser ones back to it after the Marker was removed from its pedestal a second time by Kendra. A good indicator of this? It never summoned necromorphs to help fight you. The Hive Mind, despite its massive size, gave no indication that it was anything more than another violent animal with no more intelligence than your average necromorph, and the necromorphs themselves didn't seem to possess a guiding intellect larger than their own instinctive need to kill and reproduce. It was a theory Kyne and Mercer came up with to explain the necromorphs since the Hive Mind was sealed inside the planet, and the Marker was apparently keeping it sealed, Kyne came to believe that the Hive Mind was the source of the necromorphs, and that the Marker was a dangerous but not inherently malevolent force: to his thinking it was Pandora's Box: in our ignorance we opened it and loosed horror upon the galaxy, and the only way to end that horror was to shut the box again. There is no actual proof that the Hive Mind controls the necromorphs.
